It's Halloween month, so what better challenge than a ghost hunt with a twist.
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z
Here are seven ghosts from literature, TV or the movies. We know you can do the alphabet challenge, but, can you identify where they are from as well? Of course no Bing or other Internet search, or asking your spouse! The answers will appear in next month's newsletter. Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work:
NEARLY HEADLESS NICK
GEORGE AND MARION KERBY
The 85 total letters contain these 20 different letters:: A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P R S T U Y
You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.
Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.
See the Alphabet Tutorial page for an excellent way to track any and all of our alphabet type challenges.
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:
WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD
Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.
You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.
Send your results to:
You must type that address into your email program.
Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge
For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge

K3WWP: Pretty easy this month. Probably my quickest finish in several months now. Trivia: Headless Horseman from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Never heard of poor Nick. Slimer from Ghostbusters. Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street. Captain Gregg from The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. George and Marion Kerby from Topper. Thanks to all I worked. Now off to finish the European chapter challenge.
N9SE: I need to find a way to make these last a little longer. Perhaps I'll try to make it all DX next time, like K3WWP does. The European challenge is a little tougher, but with the higher bands being in good shape, that is wrapping up quickly also. Rig is a KX3, 5 watts to a 30m dipole up 30 feet (at home) and an 8ft whip (when mobile). Finally gave up on the Elecraft paddles. I returned them (great customer service at Elecraft) and ordered the Begali Adventure -wow! Expensive, but smooth! 72 de Marty
I5SKK: This time less day to complete the monthly challenge, nice and amusing despite the conditions not always so good.
AB9YC: I decided to switch it up this month and only use contacts collected while running as N9A. Well, I managed to complete the challenge using only N9A! A great victory, indeed. It took a great many more calls than I would normally take, and it was amazing to me that I seemed stuck on my final few R's. I scored the last R actually doing S&P in the last few minutes of my final shift. I was worried there near the end that I would come so close only to not complete it. Maybe next year, others will use the N#A to work the challenge, too.
G3JFS: Helped by improved conditions on the HF bands since mid September and a high level of operation by special event and portable stations around Europe the challenge was completed easily. For me, the difficult part is sorting out the paper work. I admit to being a good engineer and qrp operator but I am a really lousy Clerical Officer.
K1IEE: This one took me much longer to complete. The good thing is its a short distance to the next challenge. Thanks to all 73 Dick
N8XMS: I was skunked in both August and September but this one went well and I managed to finish it up by the 18th. As always it was a lot of fun. - Paul
PA0XAW: The 'good ears' of the SOTA stations did help me a lot with the collection of the 85 letters; nice challenge! 73, Age
K0FNR: Finally completed an alphabet challenge, and, was able to add 3 DXpeditions to my DXCC total ( TX7G, C21GC, and T30D).
K0ALN: A good challenge this month! I had conflicts with serious personal matters, and came up two or three contacts short to get the final 7 letters I needed for 100% completion. Was happy to get a few good DX contacts on ten meters at the end of the month, in spite of a couple of days that were pretty much blacked-out. Oh well, I'll be at it again in November.
N2GDS: This is the closest I've gotten to completing a monthly challenge so far. Only four Rs short!
W2JEK: WAS A GOOD CHALLENGE. NEEDED THREE R'S AT THE END BUT GOT THEM RIGHT AT THE END
WB9G/4: : I just moved to Virginia and got on the air at the end of the month. This was a pretty fun challenge once I figured out how to eliminate some local QRN. I know of the Headless Horseman from literature and Freddy Kruger from the movies. I remember a Nearly Headless guy from watching Harry Potter with my kids. I have no idea about Slimer (other than the movie), Kerby, or Gregg. KX3 to an indoor dipole. 72 de Chris
