The NAQCC January 2016 Challenge

All challenge info such as rules are now in the hands of Gary K1YAN. Email him with any questions in that regard at pix_email_k1yan (1K).

The results on this page are the responsibility of Hap K7HAP. Email him with any questions in that regard at pix_email_k7hap (1K).

PREMISE:
New Years is certainly known for its parties, but in all the celebrating, let us not forget that another grand party is just around the corner. Next month it is Mardi Gras and the folks in the Big Easy will be R E A D Y ! Traditions abound as Fat Tuesday partying hits its stride. King cakes, with their hidden baby, are eaten by the hundreds. The lucky one to find the baby in their slice is the king or queen for the evening and is responsible for buying next years cake or for throwing the next Mardi Gras party. Parades wind through the streets and the "krewes" who are responsible for them ride their floats tossing "throws" to the crowd. Beads, doubloons, candy, small toys and the prized Zulu Coconuts are typical throws. Masquerade balls and their elaborate costumes are of course a part of the carnival scene, as well as a "few" beers and the infamous Hurricane cocktail. The formal end of the festivities comes with the "Meeting of the Courts" where the king and queen of the carnival meet with their courts. As a new year begins, NAQCC wishes you and yours a happy, healthy 2016 and, as they say in New Orleans, "Laissez les bons temps rouler" ( let the good times roll ) !

TIME FRAME:
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z

RULES:
Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work subject to the General Challenge Rules. (Any spaces in the phrases should be ignored. For example the challenge phrase "INVERTED V ANTENNA" should be treated as if it is the single word "INVERTEDVANTENNA.")

LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER
KING CAKE
KREWES
BEADS
DOUBLOONS
ZULU COCONUT
MASQUERADE BALL
FLOATS

The 84 total letters contain these 21 different letters : A B C D E F G I K L M N O P Q R S T U W Z

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.

See the Alphabet Tutorial page for an excellent way to track any and all of our alphabet type challenges.

AWARDS:
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.

A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.

PRIZES:
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.

LOGS:
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:

WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD
NEXT - NF8M, W8REI, N8XMS, K9EYT

(Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.)

You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.

Send your results as text in the horizontal format shown above to:

E-mail: pix_email_k7hap (1K) (You must type that address into your email program.)
Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge
For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge

All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z.

Soapbox:
N5PHT: This was FUN - don't remember if I tried one before. Finished it sooner than I anticipated. Thanks.

N9SE: Last month I made it a 160M challenge, which turned out to be a little too difficult. There just isn't that much activity on top band on a day-to-day basis to get all the needed letters. My idea for this month's challenge was to make it an all band affair, 160-10M, including 60M. I used at least 8 letters from each band. I finished a lot earlier than I thought I would. Also, I thought I would have trouble with 60M, but it only took two callsigns to get my eight letters thanks to NN0SS.

AA4NN: My first Challenge, easier than I thought it would be. Multi-elements with 5 watts on the east coast is an amazing thing.

PA0XAW: So many letters 'E' and 'S'! Thanks for a real challenge! See you next time, 73, Age

NQ2W: This challenge was a challenge. I was getting a little nervous because the bands haven't been too good and my operating time seemed limited and usually during the same periods of time each day. I ended up getting a little bit of a change in my schedule and took full advantage. Lots of Es, Ls, Os, and Ss. The last letter I got was an E. Relieved that I was able to complete the challenge. Thanks to all the folks who I QSOd to make it happen. Let's see what next month brings! 72, Will

K1IEE: Nice challenge lot of E's and R's. Hard to believe another year gone. HNY and thanks to all 73 Dick

KA2PBO: Happy New Year to All. 72 Rick

WA2FBN: Another fun challenge. Tnx 73 Ken

N8XMS: This was a tough one! I thought that I would never get all of the S's that I needed but I found my last two on the 30th. I put a twist on this challenge by deciding to use vintage keys for all of my QSOs this month. I made a few contacts with my antique strap key but mostly I used my 1967 Vibroplex Original bug and I feel very sorry for the people that had to copy my fist on that! It's back to paddles and straight key next month.

K3WWP: A strange ending to this challenge. I came down to the last 3 days still needing 10 letters: 2 L, 6 U, 2 Z. Then on the 29th while chatting with K8LGY and getting the 2 Ls, I was looking back through my January log and my challenge worksheet. I remembered I had worked N2UU, but never logged the Us. Then I also noted YV5IUA whose Us I also neglected to log for the challenge. So I marked them down, finished chatting with K8LGY, and that left me needing the 2 Zs to finish up. I figured that would be easy with 2+ days left. I heard EW1TZ and a couple other stations with a Z in their call, but couldn't work them. Finally on the last day of the month, I found and worked N9ZXL to finish up. Except for those final Zs, I only took the QSOs as they came via my CQ, or working on my DX streak and my regular streak, never really looking specifically for the letters. Now I'm off to get my challenge worksheet ready for the February animal challenge. Can't wait till the 30th or 31st to finish this month, although we do get the one extra February day this year.

N4IVE: Wow, only missing two S call signs :( I'll have to try harder next month!

K1YAN: Another month of spotty, marginal propagation made this challenge last until the evening of the 29th. Heard four or five stations that would have finished things off just as they faded into the noise. Guess it is supposed to be a challenge so I can't complain.

K7TQ: Had to spend morning of Jan 31 at 5 W hunting for the last six letters. All the others were at 1 W on 20 m.

W2JEK: WAS A LOT OF FUN. LAST LETTERS WERE THE 'U' S. 72 AND 73 DON YOUNGER

KI4WFJ: Missed out on a couple words due just to not having 'Rs' and 'Qs'. lots of fun though.

VE3FUJ: I just could not find time to all the calls I needed other things kept getting in the way. Brion
