It is 1860 and you want to send birthday greetings to California from your Missouri QTH using the cutting edge technology of the day. Get your card and gift packaged, a couple weeks ahead of time should do, and head for the Pony Express office. Into the saddle bag it goes and it is on the way ... across the Great Plains, over the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada and finally the goods are in Sacramento. The Pony Express operated for only 18 months, from April 1860 to October 1861, but provided an important link between the new state of California and the rest of the United States. The service ran through a series of relay stations that provided fresh horses and riders to keep the mail moving. With this link in place, messages could span the country from coast to coast in a blisteringly fast ten days or so. The service was expensive, initially $5 per 1/2 ounce letter and later falling to $1 per 1/2 ounce ( roughly $26 in 2014 dollars ). Pony Express riders had a tough job, challenging the terrain, weather and hostile Native American tribes. An add for riders allegedly read, Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred. This must have appealed to some, notably one of the most famous riders, William Cody aka Buffalo Bill, but, myself I will keep on reading the want adds a bit longer. The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z
Just make ALL these words, not including the comments in parenthesis, from calls of stations you work subject to the General Challenge Rules. (Any spaces in the phrases should be ignored. For example the challenge phrase "INVERTED V ANTENNA" should be treated as if it is the single word "INVERTEDVANTENNA.")
RUSSELL ( co founder of the Pony Express )
MAJORS ( co founder of the Pony Express )
WADDELL ( co founder of the Pony Express )
SAINT JOSEPH MO
BUFFALO BILL CODY
MOCHILA ( the mail pouch )
CANTINA ( pockets in the pouch that held the mail )
The 87 total letters contain these 20 different letters : A B C D E F H I J L M N O P R S T U W Y
You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.
Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.
See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.
If you need some help with your alphabet challenge record keeping take a look at our Alphabet Tutorial page for everything from some great pencil & paper methods to fully computerized tools.
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:
WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD
NEXT - NF8M, W8REI, N8XMS, K9EYT
(Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.)
You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.
Send your results as text in the horizontal format shown above to:
E-mail: (You must type that address into your email program.)
Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge
For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge
All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z.

WI5H: I had a lot of fun on this one. Worked HI, PJ5, and AUS @ QRP power. What a blast! 72, till next month!
AA4NN: Great Pony Express challenge especially with the Azure website calculator. Nice that all the checking is automated. Fantastic. A real challenge to get all those Ls.
N3MLB: What a thrill this was. The conditions were terrible for the beginning of the month but then one night, the heavens opened up and I was working about a dozen stations with half a watt. A few days later I was able to finish the challenge in less than 12 days. Raising the G5RV an additional 10ft (60ft total) also seemed to make a difference as well.
KE2YK: Got some extra time this month to work the challenge! Really enjoyed reading about the history of the Pony Express. 72 and 73, Gary
VE3DQN: I've done only a few NAQCC Challenges, but this one seemed particularly difficult. Where are all those call signs with L, S, and T when you need them?! I spent far more radio time on the Challenge this month than I can afford. But once I plunge in, like a bad habit, I can't stop. I'll have to take a closer look at future Challenges for their degree of difficulty before starting in.
N9SE: I really like the new online tool. Made this month's challenge even more enjoyable.
WV8DH: I used the web NAQCC Letters Challenge Tool while making my contacts.I completed the letters a week ago and submitted my information then using the tool. Apparently the submission part of the program does not work as my information never appeared on the Challenge page of NAQCC. So this submission is using regular email. It was a fun challenge and the tool worked great and saved a lot of time and paper on my part. Hope the email part gets fixed before next month. 72/73 Dave
K8RJW: This is only my second challenge and it was a bit tougher than the first (only got one word on the first but wasn't really in it the first time). Sure added some QSOs while trying to get all the "S", "L" and "O" calls. QRP is the best! '72 Bob
K3WWP: It took until the 28th to gather all the Ss for this one. I had all the other letters some time before that. Except for the DX stations, I think all the others came from answers to my CQs. Another interesting alphabet challenge. My sheet of paper has very little room left on it as it took 30 different stations to complete the challenge. I may have to start using bigger than 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of paper or print smaller. HI Thanks.
W3IQ: This is my first complete challenge. I started the July a bit late and couldn't get it finished on time. Also, this was done with my new Elecraft KX2. What a great little radio. 73, Bud
KU4A: I hadn't worked one of these in years, and really kind of poo-poohed them as stupid and dumb. But the new web site for reporting completely changed my attitude and I really enjoyed this one despite summertime heat in the shack. So, I plan to become a regular at these from now on. Got my last letter ("F") on the 26th by working a French station. Congrats to all those involved in the web site. It rocks.
KI4IO: Equipment: K2 @ 5Watts; homebrew 30 meter transceiver 2 Watts; homebvrew 40 meter transceiver 4 Watts; 40m dipole w/open wire feed and tuner. Towards the end of the month, I felt like calling "CQ letter L", but who would know what the heck I meant.... Jerry
N8XMS: I came up short on L's and O's by quite a few. But it was fun as always.
N1JI: Love the new web-based application for tracking the alphabet challenges!
K1YAN: Not a single contact with a station that had a T in their call. Guess I needed some better propagation to bring more DX calls into play. Hope to see the lower bands take off for this winter.
K1IEE: Had a real hard time trying to match my operating time with good band conditions. At one point I thought this might be my first incomplete challenge. I did make it thanks to all. 73 Dick
W2JEK: ANOTHER GOOD CHALLENGE DESPITE POOR CONDITIONS. LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH'S MILLIWATT CHALLENGE. 72 AND 73 DON YOUNGER
VE3FUJ: This Time a little different Challenge, a bit of western History. Very enjoyable even when I came up short on words. Brion
WN0WWY: Really really liked the new APP !!!
WA2FBN: With summer time activities and current propagation conditions; bands were pretty dead for me. Thanks to all who help with these fun sprints. LNR LD5 at 5watts into end fed half wave up 25 ft. 73 Ken
