BLACK TOM ISLAND

PREMISE:
We think of the USA as being far enough from the European World War I theater that no danger of physical confrontation or damage existed in the homeland. While this was true for the most part, there was an incident in New York Harbor that must have brought fear to many Americans. In 1915 the sale of American munitions to any but the Allied powers was forbidden. In response to this order German secret agents were deployed to obstruct the flow of US munitions. Black Tom Island was adjacent to Liberty Island and had been expanded and connected to the mainland for use as a storage depot. On the night of July 30, 1916, some 1000 tons of small arms and artillery ammunition and 50 tons of TNT, awaiting shipment to Russia, were stored on barges and in the depot on the island. After midnight guards discovered a series of small fires on the pier. Some guards fled, some fought the fires and eventually the fire department was called to the scene. At 2:08 a.m. the first and largest explosion occurred. Seven deaths and hundreds of injuries resulted. Fragments from the explosion impacted buildings and the Statue of Liberty. The explosion was the equivalent of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. It broke thousands of windows, some as far as 25 miles away, and was felt in Philadelphia. Property damage was estimated at $ 20 million ( nearly $500 million in 2018 dollars ) which included $100,000 of damage to the Statue of Liberty. Smaller explosions occurred for hours after the initial blast. Years later, a Slovak immigrant was linked to the incident and stated that two of the guards had been German agents. Today the island has been connected to the mainland by landfill projects and is part of Liberty State Park. A plaque marks the site of the explosion. We salute and thank the many who gave their service and lives during WW I and also those who have served and are now serving in the various branches of the American military.

Well look at this ... here is something new. This month we are going to try a different twist to our challenge. Chuck, KA5PVB, suggested a QRPp challenge with a reduced word list. Here it is with a little addition to the original idea. This month there are two options for our challenge. You may do all the challenge words with QRP or a mix of QRP and QRPp power levels. Nothing new there. Your other option is to use only QRPp power to complete three of the six words. It is your choice of which three you complete. Should you start out with QRPp and have a tough go of it, you can always use those contacts with some QRP ones to do the whole list. Nothing lost. Remember, QRPp at NAQCC is defined as one watt or less.

TIME FRAME:
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z

RULES:
Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work subject to the General Challenge Rules. (Any spaces in the phrases should be ignored. For example the challenge phrase "INVERTED V ANTENNA" should be treated as if it is the single word "INVERTEDVANTENNA.")

BLACK TOM ISLAND
NEW YORK HARBOR
STATUE OF LIBERTY
SMALL ARMS AMMO
ARTILLERY AMMO
LIBERTY STATE PARK

The 84 total letters contain these 20 different letters: A B C D E F H I K L M N O P R S T U W Y

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.

If you need some help with your alphabet challenge record keeping take a look at our Alphabet Tutorial page for everything from some great pencil & paper methods to fully computerized tools.

AWARDS:
A certificate and a participation point go to everyone making all the words with QRP or a mix of QRP and QRPp or making three of the words with only QRPp and submitting their report before the deadline.

A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.

PRIZES:
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.

LOGS:
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. To avoid any confusion, in addition to your completed word list, please indicate whether you used QRP or only QRPp.

The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:

WORD - K3WWP N2OD WA8REI N2OD
NEXT - NF8M W8REI N8XMS K9EYT

(Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.)

You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.

Send your results as text in the horizontal format shown above to:

E-mail: pix_email_k7hap (1K) (You must type that address into your email program.)
Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge
For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge

All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z.

Soapbox:

ZL1BQD: Thank goodness for the All Asia contest where i was able to get the required "T's".
Great Challenge again this month.

WU1V: This is my first challenge for some time, as I went QRO for chasing other
certificates/awards. Now I'm back in QRP-Land. Only took me 10 days to complete
this challenge, despite terrible conditions pretty much all over the bands I can
operate on. All contacts made on 20 and 40 meter bands. Did make one 30 meter QSO,
but not toward Challenge. Also made a few EU contacts across the pond, Serbia,
France, Bulgaria - also Ecuador down in SA, but mostly US stations worked. I'd
forgotten how much fun these challenges are! Back in the saddle again. 72 de Rick

N4OW: Luck was with me, not conditions :) Thanks for the fun.

KJ4R: Almost ran out of time due to multiple nights with storms in the area and
could not operate due to lightning danger. Thanks to IK2TKX and IK3VUT who gave
me the last T's that I needed. Another good month of QSO's with the PFR 3B. 73's
to everyone.

AK3X: Another fun challenge (aren't they all?) Band conditions were up and down
throughout the month. The highlight was finally working Stan, ZL2BLQ on 20 meters,
something that had eluded me for a long time. It never worked out on my "real"
antenna, but I had been playing with the configuration and trying to load the short
side of my OCF twinlead fed doublet on 20 meters as an endfed wire. The total length
of wire involved was 63 feet, sort of an inverted L. Right after I got it matched
up with my ZM-2 tuner, I heard Stan calling CQ.. very loud signal. Long story short
we made the contact. I later realized that I had turned down the power to 3 watts
while I was fooling with the end fed configuration, so even better. I told my wife
this tale and her eyes glazed over.... 72 to all, Peter

KD0V: The Challenge this month was easier than the one last month, because of better
band conditions. It is really interesting working QRP. The reactions by other hams
is amazing. Usually it is 73's CUL, but sometimes the op's on the other end are
amazed and stay around until the band goes out. Worked one ham that was running 400
watts. We gave each other 559 signal reports and manage a 20 minutes QSO both
conditions got bad. Also receive a very interesting signal report, 388, I am not
sure what it means. Lots of other QRP stations on the air, vacation season!
72, and CU next month. Merlin

NF1U: This month seemed more of a challenge due to HF Propagation. None the less,
still fun to work the challenges.

KA5PVB: I called CQ for many hours at QRPp levels with no joy here! {Possibly summer
is NOT the time for QRPp (of 26 stations worked for this event only 8 were at the
QRPp level). I did manage to work enough stations for completing the challenge at
the 5 watt level with my FT-817ND BUT had only one contact with my 40 meter version
of Lil' Joe (.65 watts)! Hope everyone else had more luck with QRPp than I did!
Looking forward to the July version of Challenge, thanks to the organizers for all
their work. 73, Chuck

N8XMS: This was a funny one for me. I never worked one single call with an "L" in
it but there was only one item in the list of words that didn't need an "L"!
So not a very good showing for me but a lot of fun anyway.

WB4OMM: Try as I might......just couldn't get 'em all! Will try agin in July!
73 to all - Safe and Happy 4th! Steve

N9SE: All QRPp (less than 1W) this month.

WB4DBO: My first NAQCC Word Challenge! New member #9497

K1IEE: My limited operating times and the poor band conditions made for an
interesting challenge. Its always great to get on the air and the challenges
are a good reason to do that,
Thanks to all Dick

WA2FBN: Poor condx this month, not much activity heard at my location. 72 Ken

KI4IO: R's and M's were not to be had this month
