THE CHALLENGE APPLICATION HAS MOVED! THE NEW LOCATION IS: http://naqcc.wb5rvz.org The BIG BEN Challenge ![]() PREMISE: If you are touring London, your “to see list” will most likely have Big Ben near the top. It is located in the Elizabeth Tower of the Palace of Westminster. Construction of the clock was completed in 1859. Big Ben, however, is actually the nickname of the Great Bell of the famous clock and not the clock itself. At 13.5 long tons, it is the biggest of the five tower bells and chimes on the hour. It was delivered to the tower on a wagon drawn by 16 horses and raised to its position in the 315 foot tower by hand, a 34 hour process. The sound of the bell is world famous. It does not have the round, ringing tone of a normal bell because of a slot at its bottom that was cut at the location of a crack. The clock is hand wound three times a week in an hour and a half process. Its outstanding accuracy, for a clock of its kind, is in part due to the 13 foot, 660 pound pendulum. It is enclosed in a windproof box below the clock. Fine tuning of the pendulum is done with penny coins placed on top of it. A single penny changes the clock’s speed by about 0.4 seconds a day. The 23 foot diameter dials have a surface made of opal glass set into a metal frame. The 334 stairs leading up the tower to the clock are not open to the public so you will have to be satisfied with the view from below. TIME FRAME: The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z. RULES: Just make these words from calls of stations you work, subject to the General Challenge Rules.
