THE VERSABAR VB-10000

PREMISE:

The ocean can be a dangerous place and has a history of countless shipwrecks to prove it. As long as ships have been sinking, there have been those who try to salvage them. Equipment and methods have advanced over the years as have the size of ships. The case of the MV Golden Ray is a good example.

The MV Golden Ray was a roll-on/roll-off car transport vessel. She measured about 656 ft. long and about 116 ft. wide. On September 8, 2019, she departed Brunswick, GA with a load of some 4300 new cars in her hold. During a turn in the harbor she ran aground, heavily listed ( tilted ) and quickly sank onto her side. Improper ballasting ( filling large water tanks to balance the ship ), resulted in an instability that caused the capsize, trapping 24 crew members. The Coast Guard and first responders saved all of the crew, some fires were extinguished and most of the, now junk, cargo was removed. This left the ship itself to be dealt with.

The removal plan called for cutting the ship into 8 sections, some as heavy as 4500 tons. Removing these massive sections would require a huge, seagoing crane to place them on barges. The Versabar VB-10000, the largest heavy lift vessel ever constructed in the US, was selected for the task. It is a pair of huge trusses that look like two upside down U shapes. The trusses, which are about 240 ft. tall, are joined together, side by side with their feet resting on two barges. The barges are 300 ft. long, 72 ft. wide and have a clear space of 160 ft. between them. Each barge has a helipad mounted on it and a 4000 HP engine. The Golden Ray was cut apart with a diamond cutting chain that    is part of the Versabar. Its 6800 ton lifting capacity allowed a safe transfer of the sections to cargo barges, docked under the Versabar. The Versabar finds work doing such things as disassembling deep sea drilling platforms, marine salvage and other ocean going projects requiring very heavy lifting capabilities.

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

They are always educational and provide an excuse to go out for some QRP
POTA.  That is the ultimate "2-fer".

EQUIPMENT: Elecraft K2 at 5 Watts Homebrew 40 meter phasing XCVR - 5 Watts
Homebrew 30 meter XCVR - 3 Watts 66’ flat-top antenna with open-wire feed
and home-brew tuner.
Comment: As usual, filled the log with POTA stations and only one DX
station. Gone, seemingly, are the days when a fellow could fill the log
with exotic DX call-signs.

K3ES: Duplicate of back-channel report to confirm submit routine works (for
Robbie).

N8XMS: I finished this one pretty early and about a third of the call
signs that I used were DX.  So maybe the summer propagation doldrums are
over!
