BOMBING MAUNA LOA

Bombers

PREMISE:

In late November of 1935, Hawaii's Mauana Loa began to erupt. Lava flowed and threatened Hilo, a town with about 16,000 residents. The usual solution for handling such an event is to get out of the way as fast as possible and let nature take its course. Some scientists decided that a different approach might possibly save Hilo. The Army Air Corps, later to be the Air Force, was enlisted to help. The idea was to divert the lava flow by bombing the volcano. The mission was planned for the 23rd Bombardment Squadron led by, then, Lt. Colonel George S. Patton, later of WW2 fame. On December 27th, a group of three B-3A and two B-6A biplane bombers lifted off from Luke Field in Oahu to make a run over the volcano. They came in at low altitude and dropped their twenty 600-pound bombs on Mauna Loa, targeting the channel of the flow. One pilot flew so low that he returned with holes burned through the fabric of his lower wing by flying lava. Their run was right on target and hit the flow and the sides of the channel directing it. The impact was not enough to immediately stop or divert the flow. It did, however, stop shortly after on January 2, 1936. The release of gas and pressure by the explosions was credited with halting the flow and the mission was declared a success.

TIME FRAME:
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z.

RULES:
Just make these words from calls of stations you work, subject to the General Challenge Rules.

1935 MAUNA LOA ERUPTION
LT COLONEL GEORGE S PATTON
ARMY AIR CORP B3A B6A BOMBERS
RELEASE OF GAS AND PRESSURE

The 89 total letters contain these 22 different letters: A B C E F G I L M N O P R S T U Y 1 3 5 6 9

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.

If you need some help with your alphabet challenge record keeping take a look at our Alphabet Tutorial page for everything from some great pencil & paper methods to fully computerized tools.
