Jul 2010 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#69)

104, 105, 121, 116. Fantastic - is there any other 2 hour CW and/or QRP sprint that has had 4 straight sprints with 100 or more logs submitted? I don't think so, but even if there is another one besides our NAQCC sprints, I'm still extremely proud of our members and their dedication to our sprints and the club in general. Because of your dedication and devotion to our sprints that has raised them to this level, we've decided now, beginning in August to abandon our time zone divisions and go with 10 call area plus Canada and DX divisions in our SWA category. So that will be a maximum of 12 certificates for the SWA category. Also reducing the geographical area for each division will make for better competition. Certain areas are better for getting the higher scores than others. Now you'll only be competing against others from your call area. Perhaps some day if participation keeps growing, we can use states as our divisions. For now beginning next month though, it's call areas. See further down the page to see how this month's SWA results look under the new format. There will be no change at all in the GAIN category. It will continue as always unless it eventually grows to the same size as the SWA category. - K3WWP

SOAPBOX:
K3WWP - Things seemed a little slower tonight than the past couple months. 20 didn't seem as good as last month. Virtually nothing on 80M - only wkd KA2KGP and AB8FJ there. 40 was my workhorse. I just sat and called CQ for about an hour and 40 minutes or so there and never went more than 4 or 5 minutes without an answer. It will be interesting to see how others fared around the country as the logs start pouring in. Despite the slowness, I really enjoyed the sprint mainly because of working so many folks who are fairly new to the club and/or to our sprints.

N1LU - I had to pack it in early due to thunderstorms. I realized I maybe went a little too long when my auto-tuner started going nuts on my last qso with W9DLN. Had fun in the QRN while it lasted.

W0EJ - Uncle! Couldn't take the noise anymore and pulled the plug. This has to have been the worst condx I've every seen in a sprint. Will miss next month due to a motorcycle trip out west, ending up in Sturgis but will be here in September. All the best and GL 72 de Bill #2271

WB5NMZ - Another great sprint! Thanks to all who participated and -- most importantly -- to those devoted their time organizing it! (You're certainly welcome, our pleasure - K3WWP) 73 de WB5NMZ

KB3AAG - Sorry guys I am just not with it tonite. The XYL was admitted to the hospital today and insisted I come out to the hollar and do this! I quitv earl as my hart just isnt in it. Frank

W4HH - Heard over twice as many stations as I worked. Lots of QSB in E VA. Gud to hear so many working the Sprint.

K0FTC - First log, not sure I've got the concept of new multiplier, 73, John (Log looks perfect to me - K3WWP)

WU7F - Had to work, but managed one contact so I could submit a log

K6KQV - Good contest. I wish the conditions were more favorable. Worked many old friends tonight. Thanks to all for a fun time. Vy 72/73 Bill K6KQV #1500

N8IW - My first NAQCC Sprint after becoming an NAQCC member only a couple of days ago. In spite of some noisy band conditions in northeast Ohio I had a lot of fun!

AB8FJ - Rough conditions tonight on 40 & 80 but glad to work John, K3WWP for my one contact on 80. 40 Meters was evidently the place to be for the last hour of the sprint. Rig used was my Ten-Tec Argonaut II @ 5W to the random wire up 15 feet. Key used was my Bencher RJ-2. Thanks everyone for another enjoyable sprint!

NF8M - QRN on 40 wid lots of QSB es 80 nonexistent hr. Only got on fer abt 1/2 hr - was out enjoying summer!

N0TA - Pretty tough evening in Colorado - everybody was weak! 20m fair, with a few Q's on 40m. Didn't hear anyone on 80m. K3, BigIR, GenLog.

AA9L - 40 was the band. A little noisy but lots of stations. Nothing on 80 and one on 20.

KK1X - First time participant - did more lurking than contacting. Still trying to become proficient. This will help. I got two on 20, but 40 and 80 were exceptionally noisy - too much for my brain to filter yet.

WA9VEE - Missed 2... SRI :(

VA3PEN - I thought the sprint was yesterday for some reason, and everything was set up. While waiting for the sprint to start I fell asleep. I thought I missed the sprint again. This morning I realized that it was actually tonight. I could not go down to 80m because of the interference coming from neighbours' plasma TVs so I stayed on 40m. This is my first time to make 15 QSOs, hi hi.

KJ4IC - New QTH in NJ with low wire made it tough. Hope to get a better ant up soon. Enjoyed as usual - 73 es cu next time - Bob

KD5MMM - 40 was noisy, but made a few on 20. 73 all ..

AE4RV - My first QRP sprint or at least the first one I put some effort in to. I have to admit that I almost gave up after only getting two QSOs in the first 40 minutes but I stayed with it. My rate began to improve and I really started enjoying it. I can see how operator skill makes a big difference! Worked John, K3WWP early on and gave him a very honest 599 - he was booming in! Nice sigs from VA2SG, K4BAI and K9PL, also. Challenging but fun. See you next month if I can make it.

K6CSL - Well, the Solar Flux is up to 89 today, however most signals are quite weak with poor band stability. Lots of QSB and no matter how hard I tried, I seemed to have a pipeline to Oregon today. Lots of fun anyway. I was hearing lots of DX on both 20 and 40. I wish I could have completed a finally lost QSO with(I think) WB5MAA in TX. He just seemed to be unable to copy my number on 40. Bert

KE9DR - Did not have much time to devote to the sprint but wanted to help keep the 100 plus logs record going. I heard several west coast NA stations on 20. Here QSB was bad on both 20 and 40 and 80 sounded very noisy. Thanks again to John (K3WWP) and Tom (WY3H) for all the hard work making NAQCC a great QRP club. Tnx es 73 Bert

VE3FUJ - It was fun again to night. 40 was noisy at first so I went to 20, and it was hopping along well, then petered out abt 1/2 way through, so I went back to 40 and got a few more. My apologies to N4ESS QSB got him before exchange was complete. There were a couple of strong stations from out west. And W4HEX sorry you couldn't hear me well enough, with a signal rprt 229 what can one expect. HEE HEE Ah such is Murphy's Law of the Airwaves. VE3FUJ Brion

KD2MX - Conditions seemed ok but I didn't make all that many QSOs. 20M was very quiet at the outset so I went to 40 for awhile. Switched around until about 0130 after which I stayed on 20M. Strong signals from out west and was also able to work the mid-west. Tried to snag an AA7 in OR who was very strong here but he was doing S&P and I was not able to get him to hear my CQ. I tried 80M which was surprisingly quiet relative to all the storms in the area but I seemed to be all alone there. All in all, a pleasant evening.

N4NM - Well, that just goes to show how spoiled we are with loggers interfaced with radios. When using GENLOG, I failed to change the band settings when shifting to 40M. Sound familiar? Before the contest was over, I manually changed the band tags, using my best guess as to when I shifted. My straight key fist USED to be pretty good (1950s). At 71, it's gonna take a few more of these before it sounds like it did then. Meantime, I seems like y'all managed to copy OK. Great fun! Chuck, N4NM (Thanks, K4BAI, for the Q and for the many 'urgings' to try this sprint)

W0MSM - fun sprint,a little qsb on 20 made some trouble and 40 was noisy..will be nice to hear a quiet band again HI! tnx to all for the contacts...see ya next time 73 Mark

K3RLL - FT817 @ 5W - Some very strong signals tonight. My apologies to those whom I couldn't quite pull out and my thanks to those who heard me. Was rolling along until my battery went dead. See you next time. 72/73 ... Don

AA2YV - Used my HW-9 again. I set up my end-fed 80M ant; too much QRN though. Stayed on 40M. I began hearing Texas stations at 0210 (K5GQ couldn't copy me). No western stations heard. It was another enjoyable evening. Great company. 72's, Bill AA2YV

W9DLN - This was my first NAQCC Sprint and wow, it was a lot of fun! Ran into many familiar calls. Conditions were great on the two bands I operated on. Looking forward to the next one! 73 all... Dan

N8LA - Lots of QRM on 40, but finally worked K3WWP -- who even remembered my name!! -- and then was able to snag a few more on 40. Tried 80 and 20, but worked nothing on either band. Still was lots of fun and enabled me to keep my tenuous grip on sanity. Hopefully, anticipating the August Sprint will help maintain it until then!

W7PAU - Hello there, I hope this is what your looking for...I had a lot of fun, I dont nornally operate contests....sincerely Paul

KK7S - I decided to use the hexbeam this time instead of the doublet to see if it would help me overcome some local QRN. It did make it easier to copy even though the noise here was above S3 the whole time. (Wish my noise level was that low here - usually S7 to S9 plus - K3WWP) Lots of fun again. See you next time!

W7GVE - A great start but a so-so finish---- Still did better than last time Heard WL7WH in AK a few seconds after the contest ended----Those 2 hours sure fly by -- 72 ED

N4ESS - 20 was packed for the first hour then the band dropped out here. Noise on 40 and 80 made them hard bands to use successfully. FT-817 through a tuner to a 160m dipole up 50' using a Speed-X straight key. Rich

KC9MTP - My first one I got to fully participate in. A bit harder and more difficult then I expected, but slower then expected also. Lots of fun though. Gotta work on better ears. QSB = headach! I some how lost the first two QSO's while messing with the logger. Things where slightly different from V7.41 on my desktop vs v7 on the laptop AND the #/Pwr field didn't show up either and it freaked me out along with the name on the top changing from NAQCC Sprint to "John" for example. I thought I didn't pick the sprint or it did something funny on me. Double freak out so I started closing and reopening, new file thing a few times..... then I realized it was member names showing up! #/Pwr didn't show up until I came back from getting dinner. Left the logger on until I knew I could close it without losing anything and it just popped up. I think after making the log file when I got back home is when. Weird, but works good now and can't wait for next month. -First Timers / First Time Logger Users: Practice with the logger (or newer version for the old timers) BEFORE HAND if you plan on using it. It's simple, but it can do a whole lot of other stuff too. I was real surprised. Updated the members file was very easy too. Well that's my long story about my first shot at this. Thanks for the fun and challenge everyone. Thanks K3WWP for the early'ish QSO, was the smoothest one all night (I try to make it easy for those new to our sprints - K3WWP). Looking forward to getting better with all your help.

N9KR - Really outstanding conditions on 40 for this one. Good to hear so many NA's on. Big fun -- as usual.

WB8ENE - Had vacation scheduled the rest of the week, so was able to stay up for the whole sprint! 40 seemed the place to be. Was hoping to make a few contacts on 80, but nothing heard. Switched to 20 later to bag a few west coast stations. Thanks for both the NAQCC contact and the SKCC contact from Oregon Vern, AA7VW. Now I only need 2 more for my SKCC WAS. (How about your NAQCC WAS? - K3WWP) I'm surprised I didn't hear you John, K3WWP. I spent almost 90 minutes going up and down the band on 40. Thanks for the contacts, 73 to all, and see you in the next sprint.

N8XMS - We pulled babysitting duty for our new granddaughter so I had a little bit of a late start. (She was worth it!) But there was some really great participation on 40-meters and I set a new personal record for one our sprints with 30 QSOs. Recently I have been trying to learn how to use a bug and although I have only had three on-air QSOs with it prior to this sprint, I decided to give it a try. ("Fools rush in where angels fear to tread!") I knew that this would cut down on my bonus multiplier but the score is only a secondary goal for me. I had an absolute blast and I think my bug sending significantly improved during the evening - at least "CQ NA DE N8XMS K" flows smoothly! My thanks to all of the fine ops who were able to copy my rather ragged bug-sent CW!

WB8LZG - Hello agn radio addicts ! 20m started out gud but after 5 QSOs it seem to fade so i went to 40m. 40m was packed like sardines! from 7030 to 7050 there were wall to wall qrpers. Many sigs down in the mud but many 599+ . Just when things were hoppin wild on 40...... the XYL was on the war path! I hadn't taken out the trash es several "other" chores due to be done. "but honey sprint" was not a gud enough excuse tonight es i had to QRT es pull the plug at 915pm. I hope all of you worked those "elusive" states u been looking for. till next sprint. 73 Gregg

KE5YUM - I used my Genesis Q5-20 in the sprint for the first time. Being committed to one frequency running 1 watt has its challenges, but the rewards are great. Thanks to AA4W, W0EJ, and W7GVE for the contacts. Fortunately the noise level was low in OK.

KA2KGP - Yikes! ... A sprint nightmare for band conditions. A nasty night with 1 QSO on 20m. & 1 on 80m. with lousy hi-QRN here in WNY. Most contacts were on 40m. with QSB & low-strength signals prevailing through out the sprint. Hope for better bands coming up. 73 (Glad to be your 1 80M QSO. You were one of my 2 here - K3WWP)

KD0V - Enjoyable sprint. Not much QRN or QSB and very good signals. It was nice to hear MT, OR, and WA.

KW4JS - Conditions here in the TN valley were poor. Lots of QRN and QSB. Worked the contest convalescing in the recliner due to a foot injury. Used K1 and 24' random horizontal wire at 8' running from the recliner in the living room down the hallway. 16' counterpoise routed around the living room behind sofa. Straight key code is hard when operated from the padded arm of a recliner. Thank you to everyone I worked and I promise the code will be better next sprint. 72, John

KI4WXI (son of KW4JS) - This is my first sprint and my second and third cw contacts. I am 13 years old. Thanks for the qso's.

K4BAI - Not much activity on 20M and signals were generally weak. Good multipliers, though. 40M was quite good, but with some QRN. Activity seemed up on 40M. Best DX was W7OM in WA. 80M was pretty good with some QRN, but only sprinter heard on 80 was K4AHO in FL. Thanks for all QSOs and hope to see you all next month. 73, John, K4BAI.

K2GLS - A rough night with local thunder storms interrupting me, and continuous static crashes making it hard to copy the weaker signals on 40 meters. Still a lot of fun trying to copy the exchange and getting correct.

KB8FE - Lots of QRN from local storms ... but we needed the rain !!!

AA4W - Another FUN Sprint! There were plenty of signals on 20 and 40 (with a lot of QRM on 40). '80 was pretty useless from Florida. I decided, this month, to try to work as many weak signals as I could. (Was I too strong to work? HI HI - K3WWP) About half of my contacts were with weak ones into Florida. It was fun and a different challenge! I didn't hear any stations from new england. Nothing east of PA. See you all next month!

W8DW - Bands were pretty dead and noisy until last half-hour of the contest but still had good time.

VA2SG - My humble effort for a 100 logs. 20 was not bad but things got worse at 9PM, on 40, struggling with all the things beginning with the letter Q, static etc..., knew you were there but just couldnt have good copy. Thanks anyway CU in the next one.

K0AE - 1ST NAQCC sprint. Enjoyed excellent cw ops. GenLogger makes it easy. Hope to be there next month.

K1IEE - Just before the start of the sprint we had severe thunderstorms and lost electrical power. When this happens in rural Maine that means its gone for an extended period of time. I rushed to hook up my little Honda generator and got the rig on the air, by then the storm seemed to subside ( at least in my mind ) so I made several contacts until I realized the heavy lightning, rain and thunder was not going away so I shut down early. Got power back Thursday. Thanks for the QSO's. Sure glad I could make it. Dick

K8CN - So much fun to haul out straight key and ask muscles to remember how to use it. Severe lightning storm forced immediate shutdown in midst of QSO with VE3MO on 40M -- many apologies for dumping you unceremoniously, but I feared for my K2 front-end! 72 de Mike, K8CN, Durham NH.

KB0ETU - Almost didn't submit log. I only logged the time on the first contact - shame on me! Next time I'll know better. Looking forward to the next one. (Glad you did submit anyway - I'll work it out - K3WWP)

AI4VA - Got a late start this time. But great fun! Tnx to all! 73 David.

KG4YLZ - I had computer and log problems. reconstructed log from scraps of hand written notes. Some band and times may be in error. There was nothing wrong with the log. I was the problem. I will be better prepared for the next SPRINT. I did enjoy the SPRINT and look forawrd to the next one. Jim

G0AZR - Maybe this was not the sprint to start on. Early morning in UK with work the next day. Some US stations heard on 20 and 40 but no sign of a contact and later in the sprint deep QSB.I think the two European stations took pity on my constant 'CQ NA' Equipment: FT817; half wave dipole for 80mtrs set as an inverted V and Junker Key (plus an alarm clock set at quiet so as not to wake the XYL)

NO2D - Always fun. Wish I could have spent the whole time operating.

K4JPN - Condition very poor in GA last night. 72, Steve

WD0K - Greetings All! My ole MFJ qrp rig worked just fine; 4w and a good antennae. On 20, If I heard them, I cud wrk them! Don't get any better than that!!! Good sprint! My fist improved over the month and my ole straight key worked great! 72's Rich/wd0k/664

N1DN - My first NAQCC sprint. Only made a few contacts...appreciate the QSOs and will definitely be back next month. Phil in CT (Welcome aboard Phil [and all other first-timers]. I'm glad and honored to have been your first QSO - K3WWP) W2SH - My antennas had been grounded since the first overhead thunderclap. I reconnected them just as the sprint began, and although thunderstorms continued passing through for the next two hours, they stayed several miles north and south of my NJ QTH. Nevertheless, after three QSOs on 40, the QRN was intolerable so moving to 20 saved my eardrums. After the first hour, the 20m skip grew shorter (but KK7S's WA signal remained strong). I renewed the struggle on 40m, ending up with 22 QSOs split evenly between the two bands. I peeked once at 80m, but found only painful QRN there.

AA7VW - Fun event. 40 was quiet here in Oregon. 20 was good. Heard lots of signals from east coast but couldn't quite copy them. I was in the hills here at 4200 ft. First fun contest for me.

N8BB - Not my best and not my worst, all in all a good time on 40 meters only. Thought about other bands but they just kept coming on 40 so why take a chance and lose my spot. Nice signal from John K3WWP but didn't hear from Tom WY3H. Worked allot of my good friends and appreciate the ears, I had lots of qrn and had to get a few repeats but as always everyone was great. Missed many in the noise but sure will be looking forward to the next sprint and get that average to under 2 minutes per contact. I have to say this group is one of the better for sprint exchanges, many very good ops out there and a growing group we have to look forward to. Hope to see 150 plus logs coming in John, like to see you busy,hi. (That would be wonderful - K3WWP) Thanks to all. Werner

W5YDM - 40m and 20m were both good here, with 20 being quieter. 20 lasted the whole two hours. There were loads of signals, the radio was flawless and the new headphones silenced the extraneous QRM, so why didn't I make more contacts? I've done better in poor conditions, but guess it wasn't my night. I would again like to suggest that stations learn to call on or near zero beat. It's hard to tell if I am the one being called if the caller is very high or very low. Some off frequency callers gave my callsign first which eliminated all confusion and I think that is a good technique for off-frequency contacts, and it only lengthens the exchange a slight amount.

K4ORD - spent first 23 minutes on 20M, signals were weak, got 4 contacts, so went to 40M and had a great run, many times several stations were calling at once, qrn was very bad around s8 to s9. near end of sprint went back to 20M and got 2 more. Nice to hear more folks getting on the sprint. Had fun, looking forward to next month. Thanks for all the qso's

N1IMW - Fine evening here in New England. Thanks for all the great stations out there. . .I was on 40 all night and, as always, had great cw fun! Thanks NAQCC !!

W2JEK - despite the noise 40m was great. all but two qso's were on 40. had one on 20 and one on 80. the 80m qso was with kc2vbu [4574] who was using his rockmite at 500 mw. he is 3 blocks away and has only a few qso's. used my ft-840 at 5w and wire antennas and signal electric key. 72 and 73 don younger w2jek #1135

KF7EST - My first sprint submission. Only 1 QSO but it's a start. I heard W7PAU all through the sprint but was not able to work anyone else - hope to have a new ant up soon.

KA6AIL - The bands where funny. This month I made my contacts on 20, and the signals on 40 where at my noise level. I had a great time, and this month I was not shut out.

KC2ROF - Thank you. Only 2 QSO's but a boatload of fun. Jim

WA8HSB - Started late but I had a great time tonight on 40m - didn't hear much on 20m and didn't have an antenna for 80m! I was traveling again, this time in Chester, VA. The KX1 and Buddistick worked well as usual. Thanks to all for the fun time! Hope to do it again next month. 73/72, John

N7YY - Lots of QRN but lots of fun.

KQ1P - Operated from Grindstone Island in the St. Lawrence River. Thunderstorms drove QRN up to S7 at times, otherwise conditions were pretty good on 40M and 20M was quieter but with less activity. Thanks to all for another fun sprint.

N0AZN - Only worked the last half hour family duty. Great fun thanks 73 to all. Scotty N0AZN Nebraska..

WM4X - Thanks to W7GVE for pulling me out of the noise. I could barely hear you! Also heard John's (K3WWP) 559 signal, gave my exchange then he was gone. The QSB was brutal. As usual, it was a fun sprint. See you next month.

KK5NA - RIG = K3 @ 5 WATTS Ant = EDZ @ 55' 20 Meters was good tonight...lots of fun.

K0HJC - Sorry I'm late, John! (You made it with a couple days to spare - no problem - K3WWP) My computer acted up - bug of some sort. Stayed on 20 to get away from most of the static crashes.

K4AHO - Used K1(5W) for 20/40 meters, Small Wonder+(2W) on 80. 20 Meters lots of signals and QSB. 40 M strong QRN from street light(service call made). 80 M QRN from electric fence (UGH). Was really surprised to make 2 contacts on 80... Thanks John K4BAI and Richard N4ESS. 72 Jim

KA5TJS - QRN and weak signals in S. Texas.

KC2VBU - Last month I was playing around with my RockMite and heard all these CQ NA calls, many at a speed I could copy no less and I say HEY.. This could be fun!! So I acquire my brother's 40 yr. old $10 straight key, practice up with it (had to cash in on the xtra mul. pts. hihihi), find out the straight key messed up my tx/rc offset on my particular RM80 config. so get the paddle back on and am set to rock-n-roll, power up to an IMPRESSIVE level of QRN and mess around between 40M & 80M (both Rockmites----impressive shack!!) for 90 minutes. Couldn't seem to squeeze in a call (rockbound and all that) on 7.028MHz but then I ALMOST FALL OUT OF MY CHAIR when W2JEK comes back to me out of the blue on 80M and I am able to strike!! Don is so curteous he slows his CW down to my copy speed AND I think I am his only 80M contact so here you have it....... QSO#6 ever, 1st Sprint Log, and on a Rockmite no less. What fun and thanks for a great evening......have to get building on that SW40+ kit I have in the basement, don't know what I'll do with myself once I can tune around abit!

KM4QQ - Fewer stations heard on this sprint. Lots of QRN and QRM from a faulty street light in front of the house. Add weak signals, and this made a difficult sprint! Enjoyed it!

K9FO - Icom IC703, 20M rotatable dipole @ 35 feet. 20 was OK so stayed there for my limited time. Always fun! Coast to coast in 9 QSOs! CU mext time. 72/73 Will

See General Sprint Rules for rules common to every NAQCC sprint.

RULES specific to this month's sprint:

Date and time:
Thursday, July 22, 0030-0230Z

Prize:
The winner, to be decided by drawing among all who submit a valid log, gets a choice of paddle handles, straight key knobs, and/or K2 knob inserts donated by Gregg WB8LZG. See the Prizes page in the Main section of the web site for details and pictures.

Here's how the drawing is made. In all sprints for our records we number the participants consecutively from highest to lowest score. We'll then use the random number generator feature of Excel to pick a number from those numbers.

That way, the winner could be the one with the highest score, the lowest score, or anything in between. So be sure to submit a log no matter your score if you are interested in winning these beautiful hand-crafted items. We've given Gregg's masterpieces away before and every winner has commented on their beauty and usefulness.

A member can only win once, then becomes ineligible after that.

Entry Deadline:
All entries must be RECEIVED before 2400Z on the Sunday following the sprint. So submit as soon as possible, especially regular mail entries.

Preferred method of submitting your log and report is our on-line autologger.
