Jan 2013 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#99)

Final Results

K3WWP Comments - Jan 28 0000Z - That's it. The deadline for appeals of scores and/or GOLDEN LOGS is past, and all scores are "written in stone" now. We wound up with 112 logs (including one late log) - very good although far short of last month's record of 148. I suspect that is due to the poor conditions on 40 and 20, even though 80 was in great shape once again.

SOAPBOX:
KB9ILT - Gave up after 45 minutes. Forty meters had S7 noise and another contest going on while 80 had S8 noise. I heard stations under the static, but had little chance to work them. Hope conditions are better next month...

KC2MJT - Rough start, almost a year since I've slapped a key, so the first few contacts had to suffer with some stuttering. Sorry guys. Needless to say it was fun. Heard nothing on 20, heard one faint sig on 40 I think hailed from Montana. Otherwise, all the action was on 80 for me tonight.

WU1V - Band conditions were "dreadful" with lots of RTTY and banchee noises of all sorts, plus there was some sort of contest going on around 7040 KHz. Then 40 went dead around 0230. Only contacts were on 40M - 20M was down (can't use 80M). Pieced together 3 contacts with members. Gave up after one hour. Last sprint I made 2 contacts, so this is improvement!!

KA8HDE - Quick few minutes, but had fun. Sri to K8JD - someone keyed up on you and then I didn't hear anymore. Hopefully next time. 72 de chuck ka8hde

N8XMS - My normal hangout is 40 meters but after 20 minutes I only made one QSO, W5YDM, who was also the only station that I heard! In desperation I tuned to 80 meters where my old R7 vertical acts like a dummy load with a perfect 1:1 SWR. In 45 minutes I managed to squeeze out 3 more contacts - K4ORD, NF9D, and N2ESE, but I have no idea how those guys were able to hear me! A special thanks to all 4 of my contacts and 73 to all. N8XMS

K3RLL - K2 to indoor dipole: Driven away by Digi-Lids on 40, but came back later to at least make a few nice contacts. Signals seemed down at first but picked up later with particularly good sigs from VE3FUJ and K2ARM. Thanks for pulling me out of the noise. 72, ... Don

K1YAN - Tough night on 40m with QRM and another contest, but managed 10 Qs and a promise from a non member to check out the website.

K8FZY - Bad conditions. Did have fun again. 73 all Steve k8fzy

W5IQS - Very poor band conditions here in central Texas tonight. The temporary 80 meter dipole at 15 feet didn't help much either. See you next month.

KC4GIA - Only 7 contacts, but those are the first contacts since 4/2010. Apologies for the sloppy fist. Looking forward to spending more time in my new shack and working you fine folks on CW!

K4KRW - My time got cut short by kids needing help with their math. Nice to be needed. As always, I had a great time. Thanks!

N6VOH - Good contest with bad band conditions. 20 Dropped out early here on the west coast. 72,73 Barry

WB7EUX - Odd night - some stations were pounding in here and some were in the mud - great fun and thanks to all!

W4QO - K4BAI-K3Y/4 Made me do it!

WA2JSG - 40m was kinda noisy, so stayed on 80m for the time I had available. Rig: IC-703 turned down to 5w to a vertical antenna off a 12v battery. Bencher RJ-1 straight key. HNY!

KD7HXN - Heavy QRM/QRN.

WU7F - Glad to sneak one contact in. QRM de other test. TNX

K2ZC - Fun as always. Started on 40m but was quite noisy and not much action. Then switched to 80m and things picked but was still quite noisy. I'm still trying to get used to the new KX3. For some reason my logging program keeps crashing. But that's all okay because I love a challenge. That's why we do qrp, right? 73 es tnx fer the qso's Dave

K8DRT - Only had 20 min to operate but managed a couple on 80. See you all next month.

WA2NYY - This was my first attempt at a 5 watt sprint after trying mW sprint last month. I like the low pressure speeds everyone goes at. Started on 40 but didnt hear too much activity, went to 80m and was a bit better. Had a mini pileup for a few seconds on 80 which was fun.

NU0S - Bands not very good tonight I had a lot of QRN 40m was full of other digital modes PSK31 etc from 7.030 to 7.045. Thanks Frank KB3AAG for the contact. Hope to be more active in the sprints... 73 to all the gang... NU0S, Scotty, Nebraska...

NF8M - The ARA contest chased me off 40, didn't hear any of our folks around 7040 so I went to 80. Lots of QRN but managed a good handful for just over an hour. Apologies to a couple ops I just couldn't dig out of the noise. Good to work Hank N8XX across the state and a fine QRP'er. Hope to CU next month as a member! You are a stranger here but once. 72 to all es cu on 160 next week.

W7GAH - Lots of activity on 40 early but QRN increased in the 2nd hour. Heard a few on 80 at the noise level. VE3FUJ Brion worked hard to get me but it was tough right at the end of the sprint, I don't think he got my exchange. Maybe next time. Had a good time as always. Looking forward to the next one. 73/72 Jerry W7GAH

KB0ETU - After my last contact the bands died. I hung in there, but nothing heard except for digital on 40 meters. Except for K9JWV in Utah, everyvbody seemed to be north of me. Hopefully will do better next month. 72, Phil

WD4OHD - A very frustrating evening on 40m. Nothing heard on 20m, and I currently don't have a resonant antenna for 80m. The 40m band was largely unusable after the first 30 minutes or so due to loud digital and CW signals, and QRN. Finally gave up around 0230 UT. It leads me to wonder, not for the first time, why we restrict our operating frequencies to such a narrow range. There were probably clear frequencies elsewhere on the CW portion of the 40m band where good 5W QSOs could have been made, but of course no one was listening outside the agreed upon frequency range. Maybe conditions will be better in February.

WY5R - QRN was tough on 40 and 80 this evening, but I still had a lot of fun.

K2QPN - I am always 45 minutes late to the sprint. I have a meeting to attend. Surprised to find all the activity on 80 meters. Used my KX3 (5W) and a vertical. Tried out my new mini straight key.

NZ1MT - Was it just me or were band conditions feeble? As usual 20M was dead at the start, dropped down to 40M and heard some activity mixed in with RTTY around 7.040Mhz. As usual I bagged my one and only monthly QSO from NH (N1IMW tnx Dennis). Also heard K9VON but had no luck. Dropped down to 80M and heard a lot more activity with VE3RCN being worked by a few stations, but no luck with him hearing me or KB3AAG or K4ORD (tnx for trying though!). No surprises about 80M not working for me when I'm trying to use a 40M EF dipole with ATU. Must get that 80M skywire loop up....maybe this weekend! GN & 72 Mike

K3WWP - Started out like Gangbusters, and wound up as the busted gang. My QSOs by half hour (all 80 meters): 15 - 14 - 10 - 4. Boy, if I could have just kept up that first hour for the second hour, I would have broken my personal record which is what I try to do every sprint. Conditions seemed up and down tonight. Or maybe it was just a steady downhill ride from start to finish. It will be interesting to see the other scores as they come in to try put an overall handle on conditions. Anyway thank you all for the QSOs. Hope I didn't miss anyone. Hope to see you all and more for our special 100th sprint in February. You won't want to miss that one for sure. Hope and pray for good conditions then. Oh, wonderful to hear Ivin W9ILF in our sprints again - welcome back. And thanks to NI8N for my being his only QSO.

W5YDM - FT-950/5w/J38. A decent total, but low multipliers, and I forgot to change bands in Genlog about midway so 2 or 3 will probably get thrown out.

K4ORD - That was another fun sprint, started on 40M band seemed ok but not many stations on made 4 qso's then on to 80M and stayed the rest of the sprint had a great run and made 56 qso's there. Had a station call me only got B0 many times, also on 80M tried to get K9JWV in UT but he just couldn't pull me out. Noise was fairly low and most signals were strong many up to 20db over S9, John K3WWP was 10db over S9 but I gave him an 589 before I got him tuned in good! Thanks for all the QSO'S 72/73 Riley

AB4QL - 40M went long early, 80M qsb was severe! Had a good time. . . hope I can make the next one. Barry ab4ql

KA6AIL - Great time tonight. I worked 80 for the first time. Sorry to anyone I did not hear. I have local QRM here. Hi James(K9JWV), first time I worked one station on two bands the same night. 72's to all, and see you next month.

N1MB - First sprint. Finally got the hang of it before it ended. Lot of fun

WA8REI - My wrist was killing me, but I died happily, with my straight key tied to my big toe. TNX fer all the QSOs.

WA4ZOF - Good to hear everyone again this month wish I could have put more of you in the log... TOM WA4ZOF

W2JEK - Just worked 80m but band was noisy with qsb. Hope the bands get better soon. Was still lots of fun. 72 and 73 Don Younger W2JEK #1135

KE9DR - Only got in the last 6 minutes. Been at least six months since my last sprint. Busy on a upgrade on my HB XCVR. 20 and 40 were dead here, quite a bit of NA activity on 80. Good to be back up and running thanks to all. 73, Bert

K9JWV - Wow, 20 started out gangbusters, then it died. Forty had the most legs with 80 petering out around 1950Z. Still, a fun event!

N8XX - Thanks to K4BAI for twisting my arm to try this sprint. Condx rotten on 20 and 40. Lots of QRN on 80, sometimes covered up all but strongest stations.

K1IEE - Stayed on 80M for the first hour then tried 40M which was very quiet. 20M was empty so went back to 80M. Band had QRN and signals QSB. Still had a good time. Thanks to all. 73 Dick

WG8Y - Hi all, 1 Q on 20,K9JWV in UT.Went to 40.Worked 3 Q's then got run off by the guys in the LQP test.Locust QSO Party.They sounded like locust!Hi Hi.That's ok. 80 meters sounded good here in N.C. Went back to 40 later but not a Q heard. Finished up on 80.Used my 817 @ 5W & 1/4 wave vert.wires for 20,40 & 80 over 16 radials. Thanks all for the fun evening. 72 from N.C. Mark WG8Y

W9ILF - Rig: Elecraft k2. What a night! This is the most QSO's in a sprint ever for me. Were the bands in great shape or is there just so many participants that make the QSO number so high? I can't wait to see the results. I sure had a great time hearing lots of old friends and knowing them from other QRP clubs. oo and Grrr.... ha ha.... I plan to be back next month! Ivin

K6CSL - Was fortunate to get to participate in this Sprint. I already had the rig set up for 40M, so I just stayed there. The band was relatively quiet, almost the whole band space between 7040 and 7050 was totally inundated with RTTY and other strange digital signals. Some of them were so strong I couldn't copy CW through them, especially QRP signals. It seems that is the condition almost all the time in the evening here on 40. I think it would be good if we could utilize the space between 7100 and 7125. I did at one point hear Marco, XE2S working stations about 7035, but I couldn't seem to get his attention to my calls. It sounded like he was running QRO and a keyer and maybe just wasn't interested in working someone using a straight key. About 03:00Z I got a telephone call that I really had to answer and it lasted until the expiration of the Sprint period. So I'll hope to do better next time. Bert, K6CSL

W4DUK - Started on 20m - no dice. Moved to 40m and made a couple of contacts, and then moved to 80m for the rest. Looking forward to the 160m sprint next week! 72 de Dave

AA4GA - Only had about 10 minutes to operate, but it sounded like there was a good bit of activity on 80m. Was looking for K3Y/4, but he was nowhere to be found when I swept the band. Hope I'll be able to put more time in next go around!

N8LA - Noise! Noise! Noise completely drowning out the CW voices in my head on 20 and 40 and almost drowning them out on 80! A traumatic event prevented me from doing the Dec sprint and the mw sprint. I visited Santa on the day of the Dec sprint. He refused to bring me a KX-3 for xmas and wouldn't even allow me to sit in his lap. Then he stood up and whispered something in my ear that turned my world upside down and inside out!!! I was too devastated that evening to even think about doing the Dec sprint! I recovered enough by Dec 21 to do the zombie shuffle, but xmas day brought it all back and prevented me from doing the mW sprint. I finally recovered for SKN and this sprint.

K5TRI - Finally had the time to participate again and good times it was. Band conditions where somewhat ok and the other contest happening at the same time didn't help. But hey easy would be boring. Instead of using a straight key this time, I decided to do something else and used the paddles. Left handed. I'm right handed. I think I made the most QSOs so far of all my sprint participation. Looking forward to the next one.

N8BB - Very noisy tonight, had a tough time getting started but wanted to get a few contacts in with the KX3.

KE5YUM - I enjoyed the sprint as always, and heard a lot of good signals on 40 for the time I was on. I never could pull in in WK6L, but I heard you! All the best, Terry

KQ1P - Another fine sprint, thanks NF9D and N8XX for sticking with me to complete the QSO and W2SH for working around the net that popped up on us. A fine start to 2013. John

K2GLS - Interesting propagation tonight. Nothing on 20M and while there seemed to be many signals on 40M, very few were NAQCC stations, so not as many multipliers this month. Most of my QSOs were on 80M. Plenty of activity with good signals and low noise level here. A fun evening. 72 73 to all. K3 and 80M dipole.

K3Y/4 - FT1000MP, 5W, TH6DXX, dipole, inverted vee. 20M was good to the west at the start. 40M was fair until 0200Z when the LQP started up and destroyed the sprint on 40. I went back to 40 after 0230Z (when the LQP moved to 80) and heard only one station I had worked before and a CA station who could not hear me. 80M seemed great for my receiving stations from everywhere. Activity was great with signals from 3553 up to 3564 or so, but it seemed almost everyone couldn't hear me. The best I could get from K3WWP was a ?. Many others CQed in my face. Don't think I have ever felt so weak (except maybe in the milliwatt sprint). I assume the storm north of us was causing QRN up there, but that wouldn't explain why W5IQS in TX couldn't copy my #. Hope for the same great activity and better results next time. I felt that maybe I should not have used the SKCC anniversary call, K3Y/4, and that more of my friends would have pulled out K4BAI, but who knows? Thanks for all QSOs. 73/72, John, K4BAI.

N5GW - Started out with the Argo V, but 20M fizzled out soon. Then switched to the K1 with 80/40 board and finished up using the J38 pump. I may give up on the straight key, as I never was a very coordinated person. Besides I fear I will soon start hearing the other op send "QLF?" (try sending with your left foot). HI!

VE3FUJ - 40 sounded bleak around here, but I did manage to snare a few stations Tnx fellows. The band was relatively quiet but seemed UN-occupied. My G5RV do not work well on 80, so I tend to stay away from that band. Perhaps I'm missing something, must look into it. Brion # 3011

VE3RCN - WOW! 20 qsos and 11 mults in first hour. It was like operating in the Nov SS. QRP pileups! Excellent operators. Had to use the RIT and the bandwidth filter for the QRM a few times due to proximity of other QRP operators. Downloaded GenLog v8.0...it doesnt seem to format the log like the previous version. This is the first time I had to re-type it all into the Sprint Autologger. 72 everyone, Kevin

WB8LZG - Hello agn sprinters. Didnt hv much time to sprint tonight, but wanted to show a bit of participation. 40 seemed affly noisy, 80 too. See u all agn next month. 73 Gregg

NF9D - Started on 40, worked 1 station, then moved to 80. I actually found a clear freq. and started calling CQ. Had good response. Thanks to everyone who answered.

W8DW - Good sprint with pretty good ban conditions on 80 meters. Started out on 20 and made one fast contact but did not hear any others, switched to 40 and band didn't sound too good so right to 80. Was making contacts pretty good but some real light, thanks VE8BCS for hanging in there. Took a break because of QMN net came up on my hot frequency but right back to work after they were finished. Overall a pretty good night. Thanks and 72's to all Dave

N9KR - Only 1 contact. See you next month.

KA2KGP - 20 & 40 were terrible, all QSO's were on 80m. this sprint. Rig: TenTec Argosy II at 5w. into dipole up 25 ft. with a straight key. Lots of QRM on 7040 from lid RTTY ops on QRP frequency.

KB8FE - Rather poor conditions here in northern Ohio. 80 meters was the band I chose. It seemed like the background was S8.5 and lucky for me some signals were 5 over S9. Not much snow so far this year in this part of the Medina county but already I am looking forward to spring.

K7ZI - Plenty of signals, everyone seemed to be moving around. QRO stations only 1 or 2 S units above QRP. Band noisy. Some QRP signals faded into the noise making complete copy a problem. Always a fun couple hours on the air regardless of conditions.

K5GQ - Listened and called CQ on 20 - nothing; on 40 did work KB9ILT. Then heard many other stations but not calling CQ NA. Moved to 80 M and tried again; listening then calling CQ.

K0ALN - ): Local condx: 20 was DEAD. 80 abnormal noise level was unbearable. 40 was solid except for a high speed contest that wiped out a lot of QRP signals. Oh well - see you in Feb.

KE3HL - Spent the entire sprint transmitting on 80. Started a half hour late as I was in a new CW net for our local club to generate interest in CW. Of course I plugged the NAQCC ...! I did do some listening on 40 and was able to hear one of our NV members in a QSO, but the signal was too low with fading. I have a 160M dipole constructed for the upcoming special sprint - hope to get that up ASAP and hopefully work some of you!

KB1UOH - The only NA station that I heard on 40 was in MN.

KU4A - Heard nobody on 40, and very few stations on 80. Did manage to work 3 people but signals were poor. Hope other people had better conditions.

KG3W - Spent 15 minutes on 40M trying to scare up a contact. Didn't hear even 1 naqcc calling. To bad cause even though the band was short it was pretty clear of qrn early. Is it just my area, or does 80M seem lousy width S9 static lately? Only seems to be like that for the contest. HI! Anyway thanks everyone for pulling me out of the MUD tonight. Looking forward to the 160 test on the 25th. It's going to be fun. Trust me. Call the big gun stations on 160. They have VERY good ears. "72" de Scotty

KA5TJS - Did not hear anything on 20 meters. Made 2 contacts on 40 but the signals were weak. Hit 80 meters and there every body was. I got 3 before the XYL called supper. Thanks for the QSO's guys and hope to see you next time. I used the Icom 746Pro at 4 watts and the 80 meter dipole at 30 feet. 73's Allen

VE3GNU - One of the more 'challenging' Sprints---i.e. mostly pretty weak signals here in Eastern Ontario---so I hope that my contact with W1SVU will be confirmed. Thanks to all who participated.

W2LJ - First NAQCC Speint in about a year. Good to be back and kicking off 2013 on a good foot! Thanks to everyone who participated.

NQ2W - Ten-Tec Jupiter at 5W to an inverted vee at 40' (40) and a ground mounted, homebrewed, near bottom-loaded vertical with too few radials (80). 20 was quiet. Moved to 40 and made 5 Q's there. Went to 80, made 4. Back to 40, made 1. Back to 80, made 3 more. To sum it up - quiet on 20 - noisy on 40 and 80 - QRN, QRM, and QSB - but still loads of fun. Thanks for the opportunity. Always a pleasure, 72, Will, NQ2W

N1IMW - Whoops. . .got a little bored as 40 was weak and I decided to take a short rest then get back on for another band. . .BUT. . the sandman got the better of me and I was not to return till 3 am! NZ1MT keep it up you have a super signal and you'll reach more stations soon!

WB4UHC - Enjoyed the sprint very much but did not hear as many stations and had lots of QRN, S4/5 on 40 and s3/4 on 80. Only one real strong station, WG8Y. I only called CQ for a short time because the noise hid responders. Worked some new stations and a lot of the regulars. Always nice to work K3WWP and many others. HNY to all.

W2SH - A quarter of an hour spent on 40m produced but one QSO, and that a walloping eight miles distant. Besides the band's wretched propagation, digital QRM prevailed around 7.040 mHz and QRO operating was crowded around 7.030 mHz. I notice that the 7.100-7.125 mHz region has become increasingly attractive to QRPers. On 20m only a very weak W1AW could be heard. Thankfully, 80m was in excellent shape! Operating there was a real joy and signals both near and as far as 1,000 miles were readily workable. Here in NJ, this January sprint was decidedly a monoband affair.

VE5BCS - I am sorry for giving you this mess but I had to enter. The first contact threw me off and then faded and I was sure he got my responce. Then the second contact asked for a repeat of my nr and he faded. After that things went better.

AD7TN - Happy New Year to all QRPers! I heard no sigs on 20m and even had no QSO on 40m this time. All the QSOs were done on 80m. Will try to participate as much Sprint as I can in 2013!

W1OH - Just a little time to make a couple of contacts - no one heard on 20m, one station down in noise and RTTY racket on 40m, but a few stations on 80m. Conditions seemed a bit off here on Cape Cod. Fun to get on for a few minutes though. Thanks NAQCC!

KD0V - Conditions sounded very good, but was very tired. Had a couple of very long days back to back and was traveling over the weekend. See you all next time. 72, KD0V

N9RLO - I was tired and didn't feel well, so only 3 QSOs. Hope to do better next time. 73, John
